He is a CEO at 17. And here's what you should know!

Computer whiz Jefferson Prince, who has built a 70-employee gaming company from scratch, tells S Saraswathi about motivations and challenges of entrepreneurship.

He is just out of high school, but 17-year-old Jefferson Prince is already the CEO of a company that is engaged in developing multi-platform compatible games for the PC and next-gen consoles (Xbox One, PS4).

He was born in Tirunelveli. His family relocated to London when he was three. He returned to India in December 2013 to head his own company, iCazual Entertainment.

The company had its humble beginnings in a small room in East London in 2011. Today it is housed in a four-storey building in Kodambakkam, Chennai, and employs about 70 people.

In this interview with Rediff.com, Prince talks about his interest in computing, his present endeavours and his ambitious plans for the future.

How did you get interested in IT?
I was introduced to technology when I was around four years of age.
Math, physics, computer science and robotics were my favourite subjects in school. I also enjoyed sports, but my greatest passion was working with computers.

Trying to understand the nuances behind the technical aspects of programming and applying them to my own innovations gave me a lot of joy.

My father has a background in computing and engineering.
He introduced me to electronics. Later he bought me a computer. I started pushing buttons and playing around with the applications and it just pulled me in.
I was amazed with what can be achieved with a big box with a screen attached to it!
From that point I started messing around with MS Word and I started to hunger for more knowledge. I started going into the technical side of computing which was programming.
Ninety-nine per cent of the things I know today, I learnt myself.

What were your early projects?
When I was 15, I was asked to take part in two programmes which taught me a lot about business and presentation.

The first programme was for the University of Warwick, for this I created an application that would allow parents to monitor their children at school when they are out of sight.

The second programme was for St Francis Hospice where I created a small game application and raised £1000 (1 lakh INR) without touching the £250 start-up money, within the final week. The team had the opportunity to work with Mr Barry Hearn on this project. This was an amazing experience at school.

What were your early inventions like?
I was amazed with C programming. With that I created my own basic IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network. I used it to chat with friends with a client called mIRC.

I created my own IRC Bots to keep people informed with my social links, information, etc by coding commands into the bot, so when people would say “!website” my bot would answer automatically with my site URL.

I also created my own social media network, something like Facebook. I used it to message my mother downstairs if I wanted anything, such as food or a drink. It was much easier than yelling down two floors.

I built a robotic arm with a small computer. I made it respond to my voice. For example, if I said “Elbow up,” the elbow would move. I later made it learn more complex commands and made it store information and repeat it.

I would also mix up a bunch of junk on to a small plastic board and later make it carry out some sort of function. It amazed me because I could give something that looked useless some sort of purpose in life.

What about video
 games?
The first games I played were the 1980/90s version of Prince of Persia, Age of Empires and later on World of Warcraft and RuneScape.

I used to play for hours. Then I stopped for many years and focused on learning technology and programming. My love for games was once again sparked when my friend asked me to buy an Xbox. I played Halo: Reach with my friend a lot, but I got bored because I couldn’t add many things of my own.

But more than Xbox I played RuneScape. It was a private version which I tried to alter a lot. My abilities were so limited that I couldn’t add anything 100 per cent new, so I decided to create my own game from scratch for me and three other friends.
Later on I started seeing a business opportunity here and as we progressed, this project turned into something that I wanted to build for the world to see.

What prompted the decision to get into the gaming industry? Did your parents approve of your plans?

When I got into the gaming industry, I had no idea I was doing so. I had little knowledge about the industry. But I slowly got up to speed on how big it is. It’s a $70 billion dollar industry.
My parents approved of my plans. They have been really supportive.

You are just 17 years old. How well-equipped are you to handle the challenges of running your own company?
I wasn’t equipped at all! I learn new things every day. It’s fun!
I was guided by my father and a couple of other people. I’ve learnt mostly from making a lot of mistakes. It’s the best way to learn.

When did you start your company?
This company was registered in 2011 but I’ve been building its foundations from 2009.

Did you encounter initial failures?
We first built a game trailer without any plan of the game. That was the biggest mistake I have ever made and it was a lesson.

I don’t consider it a failure; it’s more of a learning experience. I was smart enough to deal with everything else appropriately.

Game developing is not easy. With a staff of about 200, creating, developing and publishing one game could take at least 3 years and would require a huge investment. It is like making an Avatar, just smaller.

So many different technological aspects need to come together. We need a rigging artist,
dynamic artist, lighting artist, visual-effect artist and many more.

Despite offering good salary, there are not many people here for this industry. We find people in Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai, but they refuse to come down to Chennai. A lack of staff is our biggest challenge; we have only about 70 employees as yet.

Do they look up to their 17-year-old CEO or do you have problems?
The fact is no one wants a kid telling them what to do. It’s a bigchallenge but I have built an excellent rapport with my team and we are a cohesive unit.

Who put up the initial investment?
The initial investment was put up by me as well as my father. He has given me a stepping stone and I have put it to good use.

Why did you move back to India?
I asked my parents if I could move back temporarily to India so I could finish this project as it is impossible to direct something of this scale without being physically present at the centre of it.
My parents also moved back with me until this project was complete. We’ve made a lot of sacrifices for this and it was a really hard migration. We have already made plans to move back next year.

What is the market for video games in India?
India has a pretty big market for games. Even though most of it is for mobile devices right now, it will soon change.

Next month, iCazual plans to host a convention, wherein we plan to bring in game developers and students from across the globe to participate and talk about the gaming industry. We hope to create an ecosystem for gaming in India.

What are your favourite games?
My favourite games are World of Warcraft, RuneScape, MineCraft, Halo and Age of Empires.

What do you think makes a particular game go viral? And what will be the USP of your product?
A viral game requires multiple addictive elements that keep pulling the user back in. It’s hard to explain as there are many different types of games.
I cannot disclose the unique selling point of my product at this time.

But what I can mention is that our title is a futuristic FPS (first person shooter) game based in the future -- 150 years from now. It has a campaign (story mode) as well as multi-player (the main focus).

For the last year and a half, we have been building the elements for the game. Every game is built on an engine. And our game is built on the Unreal Engine 4 (a revolutionary toolset used for building high-quality games) that was launched earlier in March this year.

So it is only since then that we have actually been developing the game, but we are making good progress.

We are the first in the country to be developing a game for the latest next-gen consoles like Xbox One and PS4. iCazual Entertainment is the first company aspiring to not only develop but also publish a Triple A game.

We aim to launch this title in 2015, probably in the third quarter of next year. We still have not decided on the venue, perhaps in the United States or a European destination.

Who are the people who have inspired you?
Elon Musk, Sir Richard Branson, Steve Jobs.

What motivates you?
The feeling of doing something big and different every day; the satisfaction of getting one step closer to my dreams every day at this young age and the prize that waits for me at the end of this journey.

What are your future plans?
My future plans for this business is to expand it into the US (Los Angeles, California).
My academic goal is to enrol at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and this way I can strike a balance between business and education.
For my office in India, it’s too early to comment. But, yes, I am betting big on India.
After this is done I have some plans for operating in the Robotics and AI (artificial intelligence) industry in the future; this is my ultimate passion.

Are you ready for your first job?

How does one make a smooth transition from college to corporate life?

Should you take up a job or start something of your own?

How does one know if it's the right time? Read on to find out

As an entrepreneur, it's important to have failed and learnt from it.

Not everyone would have had the experience of running start-ups, so be ready to fail today to succeed tomorrow with your ventures.

No one wants to fail today, but just being aware that it is possible to fail today and open to learning from it is important.

The willingness to accept failure and retrospect, gives the ability to mitigate risk.

We all wish if we had failed yesterday and had only successes today. But how will you have success tomorrow without learning from today's failure?

All major principles in design or entrepreneurship like design thinking, lean start-up, business model canvas talk about the importance of iteration, which is nothing but failing fast and learning from it.

As a student, one has the liberty to fail and still no one questions their credibility because they know that s/he is learning.

When you are a student, you have few family pressures and it's much easier to get access to resources like teammates, free-mentoring (advice), and getting interns for your start-up from your very own class, or college or school.

The older you get, the greater the responsibilities and therefore lesser the capacity to take risk or innovate.

When you graduate, you probably need to support yourself, your family and in some cases, have to get married.

It is easier to spread the brand of your start-up while you are a part of a larger interconnected community like a college or school than when you are isolated.

That is the advantage of being in places like Bangalore or Silicon Valley.

The people around you talk about your venture when they meet another person with similar interests.

You have the support of your school or college and support of your friends and classmates.

This gives an edge for your start-up over others who are isolated.

The bottom line is, if you are a student who is passionate about starting, now is the best time to make those mistakes while you can still explore and learn from your mistakes.
Our education system does not appreciate failure or making mistakes.

However, with the start-up fever across the country growing exponentially every day, we can fairly assume that this outlook towards education will change soon.

Some common myths students believe in
Assume that real-life problems are domain specific
For example, when you are studying mechanical engineering, it's important to work on CAD (Computer Aided Drawing), but that does not mean you can avoid electronics with the prototype or product you are trying to make.
Any given product in the real world is built when skills from several domains come together.
To build an electric fan, experts in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and fluid dynamics, need to work together.

More certificates mean better placements
Nowadays, it is a common trend among students to think that more certificates will lead to a better resume.
Any person who is hiring hardly asks for a certificate for your achievements.
Rather, they ask the story behind your achievement or failure.
They care more about your learning experience than about your certificate.

Staying safe is always better
Most students do not explore new things during their student life.
They do not want to get out of their comfort zone.
For example, it could be speaking in public, volunteering for a non-profit or something that is outside the general skill set a student possesses.
A person evolves only when they come out of their comfort zone.

What students must do?

Learn the skill of problem solving
If there is one skill that one must learn while as a student, it is problem solving. Not just a math problem, but real-life problems.

Can you fix your electrical problems at home?
Can you solve a problem that you notice in the public while traveling?

Can you build a solution for a common problem that you see around you every day? Asking these simple questions will make you re-think your way of learning.

Get a feel for start-up
It is important to get a feel of starting up during student life.
Interning with a start-up or creating your own start-up with a bunch of classmates who have complementary skills is an excellent way to learn new things.

If you have often wished that there was some kind of guidelines to help you lead not just a debt free life, but can also help you get rich by investing in a timely manner, you are in luck! Here are some great books on personal finance and wealth creation that tell you all about how to avoid a debt trap and transform the way in which you handle your finances.
Confessions of a Shopaholic (Author: Sophie Kinsella)
Cover of Confessions of a Shopaholic
Want to start with a light read that tickles your funny bone? Then start with Confessions of a Shopaholic. Although it is a novel written in a tongue and cheek manner, it teaches you a thing or two about financial blunders that you should avoid.

The protagonist of the novel, Rebecca Bloomwood, is a contradiction as she works in a money management magazine and yet doesn’t follow any advice that she gives. In fact does quite the opposite by leading a glamorous lifestyle that her low pay does not support.
Not only do you laugh when you read the book, it quite cleverly tells you the things you should not do to fall into a debt trap.

Debt is Slavery (Author: Michael Mihalik)
Debt is Slavery
This is a book that can appeal to anyone who gets intimidated by the size of books! This book is deceptively thin and yet the advice is basic, neat and solid.
Speaking from his own experiences about the financial blunders when he was young, the author discusses several topics such as secured and unsecured debt, mortgages and credit cards and how paying off debt because of unwise decisions is akin to slavery.

How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt, and Live Prosperously (Author: Jerrold Mundis)
How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt, and Live Prosperously
Though this is a book that was written way back in 1988, it contains timeless information on how debtors who find themselves in a spiral of debt can get themselves out by following a twelve step programme called the “Debtors Anonymous”.
The interesting part of this book is the differentiation that Mundi makes between those who debt often (compulsive debtors), those who debt repeatedly (problem debtors) and those who take resort in debt with a plan.
Based on real life experiences, it is quite an eye opener even today.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich (Ramit Sethi)
I Will Teach You To Be Rich
Known as an American personal finance adviser, Ramit Sethi authored this book on personal finance in 2009. Although it primarily builds on his blog that goes by the same name and has been a hit with American youngsters and can be quite relevant to youngsters anywhere across the world.
However, it would be wrong to say that Sethi has pulled material from his blog alone to compile this book. Although it does compile the best bits from the blog, this book tells you how to inculcate financial discipline and taking small steps towards a debt free life.
This is a book that is not for everyone though.
The author takes a bold and sometimes sarcastic tone and will probably touch a chord with youngsters who have just started out in their jobs. If you are in your 40s with kids, this book may have little relevance for you.

Jago Investor: Change Your Relationship with money (Author: Manish Chauhan)
Jago Investor: Change Your Relationship with money
If you are intimidated by foreign authors and would rather read something by an Indian investment expert, this is a perfect book to begin with.
Aimed at youngsters who have just started earning and live one day at time, this book is aimed at reorienting one’s approach towards money management.
In a nutshell, this will shake you out of a financial lethargy and get started on financial discipline that will ultimately lead you on the road to wealth creation.
This selection of books will come in very handy if you are looking at guidelines to live a debt free life and becoming rich by seeing your money grow. What’s more is that they are not very expensive and can be easily ordered online for you to read at your leisure.

The author is a credit expert with 10 years of experience in personal finance and consumer banking industry and another 7 years in credit bureau sector. Rajiv was instrumental in setting up India's first credit bureau, Credit Information Bureau (India) Limited (CIBIL). He has also worked with Citibank, Canara Bank, HDFC Bank, IDBI Bank and Experian in various capacities.

Small stores go out of business as consumers flock online

It is a breezy evening and the Delhi weather is perfect for some retail therapy. Nehru Place, the city's prime IT market, is chaotic. A light drizzle has created puddles which are hard to avoid. Still, there are customers in the computer hardware stores.
They see the products in some detail, turn them upside down, ask the price and walk out - they make no purchases. Most of them plan to go home, open their laptop and buy the same stuff online.
They come to brick-and-mortar stores for enquiries and to sample the product; actual purchase happens online where the discounts are huge.
Neeraj Munjal, who owns a mobile devices store called Dhruv Sales & Marketing, whips out a calculator to show what an Apple iPad costs him. He then logs on to Amazon where it is available for almost 4 per cent less than that. Business, understandably, is down.
While he used to sell up to 12 iPads a month last year, these days he rarely sells more than eight. Rock-bottom prices offered by e-retailers, he says, have proved worse for shopkeepers like him than FDI (foreign direct investment) in retail. "An early retirement looks like reality now," he says.
Munjal and others have reason to be worried. Online shipments were 7.6 per cent of all mobile phone sales in December 2013, according to International Data Corporation; by June, these had climbed to 10.4 per cent.
Buyers check prices in tradition stores and then go online to buy. Photograph: Kind Courtesy, XXXXXXXX
These numbers are sure to rise further because popular brands like Motorola and Xiaomi are selling their new models online.
The All-India Mobile Retailers' Association is lobbying the government, at the centre as well as in the states, to contain "predatory online prices", and has convinced Samsung to launch some key models only offline.
"Today, it is unethical prices. Tomorrow it could be unavailability of products, leading to a monopoly of these e-commerce giants," says Dhiraj Malik, the secretary general of the association, with visible anxiety.
Other sectors too are seeing buyers moving online in droves: books, footwear, watches, spectacles, apparel and travel. Even car dealers may have cause to worry because Snapdeal, the homespun e-retailer, now even sells a car, the Mahindra Scorpio.
Online greengrocers have become active in some areas of Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.
Even those who sell cinema tickets in black will feel the heat. Tickets for Agadu, the latest release of Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, were recently spotted online - at a premium, of course.

With buyers from big cities and small towns alike preferring to shop online, the country is at the cusp of an e-retail revolution. A July report by Technopak Advisors, a retail consultancy, says e-retail will rise from $2.3 billion (for financial year 2014) to $32 billion by 2020.
This can also be seen as a potential loss of business for offline retailers. The shopkeepers - there are over six million big and small stores in the country - watch helplessly as business erodes slowly but steadily.
Ghaffar Market in downtown New Delhi is a bustling marketplace. Divided by just a road from its upscale neighbour, Ajmal Khan Road, it hides numerous vendors in its labyrinthine lanes: crockery, apparel, footwear and, above all, mobile phones and accessories.
Gurjeet Singh, who owns a small mobile accessories shop, looks at my Moto G and asks if I bought it online. When I tell him that it is only available online, he says with a smirk: "You'll find everything here."
He wants to convey optimism; I sense nervousness. "Our customers come to us for things that are not available anywhere. You'll find the new iPhone here a day after it is launched in the United States," he adds.
"There are many cash-rich customers who come from Punjab and cannot wait for 10 days for a phone to be delivered to them." Singh wipes a Nexus phone clean and pastes a screen guard over it. "See, you can buy these things online, but you'll always need people like us to put them on your phone."
Shopkeepers across India are banking on this "personal touch" to survive in the days to come. Amit Palit, the manager of Great Eastern Electronics, one of Kolkata's oldest electronic appliances stores, says: "I assist my customers to select a product. They will never experience this while shopping online."
But these only seem to be straws of hope that most shopkeepers are clutching at. The same products that Palit fondly shows to his customers are flying off the shelves of e-retailers.
The despair is hard to hide. Malik, who owns mobile-phone stores in Delhi's New Friends Colony and Yusuf Sarai, says: "Earlier, we used to educate our children so they could eventually join the business. I'm definitely forced to reconsider that today."
The old myth has been busted that shopkeepers of non-commodity categories like apparel and jewellery are safe from e-retail because Indians like to touch and feel before they buy.
Aided by a liberal return policy and cash-on-delivery, everything from designer wear to regulation trousers and socks are selling online.
Shopkeepers in Sarojini Nagar, Delhi's go-to place for street wear, are edgy. They see young women - seasoned bargain hunters, all of them - look at dresses and walk away, saying they're cheaper online.
Till last year, shopkeepers could demand whatever prices they wanted. "But now when you go to Jabong (the online fashion store), you see clothes that are both branded and affordable," rues a shopkeeper. He has dropped prices by 10-15 per cent.
About 270 km southwest of Delhi, the general response to e-commerce in Jaipur is denial. Most fabric and apparel wholesalers smirk or glare angrily when I mention online shopping, and refuse to be drawn into the subject.
A shopkeeper in Bapu Bazaar, requesting anonymity, says his boss has a flourishing business online, though he doesn't like talking about it.
The only exception is Johari Bazaar's Shyam Jhanwar, owner of a jewellery store called Shri Jaipur Silver Arts. "We tried the online channel, but couldn't keep up with the emails and requests. We need to hire someone with technical knowhow for this," he says.
He was approached by Snapdeal to enlist as a retailer a week ago. "My biggest worry is products being returned. That doesn't happen when you sell jewellery through the store," says Jhanwar.
The Snapdeal visit is recounted by several shopkeepers I visit, who have retained the company's card for amusement. Little are they aware that Jaipur is one of the most popular Tier-2 cities with e-commerce websites.

-The category worst hit by e-retail is books, of course. According to S C Sethi, president of the Federation of Publishers and Booksellers Associations in India, nearly 200 bookstores have shut down in the last two to three years.
But some feel there is still life left in the business. According to Praveen Khandelwal, national secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders, though bookstores were the first to be affected, the share of e-retail is only about 18 per cent.
"Those who buy books online are only looking for expensive titles and bestsellers. E-retailers do not sell regional literature, educational books and small publications," he says.
Priti Paul-owned Oxford Bookstore, a niche bookstore in large Indian cities which also has an in-house cafe, hopes to brave the storm with its promise of a carefully-selected range.
"It is just a minute segment of customers with a pre-determined list who are swayed by the online offers. For the serious buyers, the charm of browsing in a brick-and-mortar bookstore is still intact," says Swagat Sengupta, country head (operations and purchase), Apeejay Oxford Bookstore.
Some retailers feel salvation lies in bringing down the China wall between the online and offline channels. Thus, multi-brand electronics retail chain Croma offers the "order online, pick-up from the store" option, a hybrid model which may check the loss of business to e-retailers.
Ajit Joshi, managing director and CEO of Infiniti Retail, which owns Croma, says that while the brand is making strides in the online space, it will not put its expansion strategies for brick-and-mortar stores on hold.
-This confidence is somewhat missing amongst smaller retailers. Despite the start of the festive season, consumer electronics stores in Delhi's RK Puram are nervous.
"More and more people come to us with complaints that our prices are higher than online prices," says a shopkeeper here. Buyers use online offers to squeeze bigger and bigger discounts from these retailers. The impact is serious.
The shopkeeper worries if he would be able to send his daughter abroad for studies now. "It is just a matter of time."
The anxiety of shopkeepers has spread to shopping malls. Faced with dwindling business, stores want them to reduce rents. Those with vacant space find it difficult to get buyers.
One mall in a Delhi suburb is known to have appointed a consultant to suggest how to take on e-retailers. "The sizes of showrooms within malls and complexes have become more efficient," says Shubhranshu Pani, regional director for retail services at real estate consultancy Jones Lang LaSalle India.
He sees commercial complexes and shopping centres move towards a more service-oriented model, with a greater number of high streets that cannot be replicated online.
"These physical marketplaces, especially the ones like Khan Market in Delhi and Linking Road in Mumbai, will be attractive for the tourist buyers," he says.
Yogeshwar Sharma, executive director of Delhi's Select Citywalk Mall, says a complete change in retail will happen in the next five to seven years: "Standardised products such as mobile phones will go online and some percentage of brick-and-mortar stores will perform an exhibitory function."
But he adds that malls will always remain relevant because of the social experience. "You can't celebrate your birthday online! People come here for the sense of an occasion and to flaunt fashion as much as to buy it."

Arvind Singhal, chairman of Technopak Advisors, suggests that malls will have to completely rethink their tenets and rely heavily on the social interaction aspect to remain relevant. "Food is the largest entertainment," he says.
Sriram Khattar, CEO of DLF's rental business, says that the company is looking at various options to leverage e-commerce to enhance the customer experience at its malls and provide a contemporary backbone for its retailers to benefit from them.
"Nearly 25 per cent retail business in London's malls happen through this model where you browse online and pick up the product from a kiosk at the mall at your convenience," he says.
Meanwhile, the e-retail revolution has started to impact fast-food chains as well - all of a sudden, they find delivery boys hard to find. Most of them have been poached by courier companies for e-retail.
Ecom Express, a new company which specialises in delivering online orders, has got 2,200 delivery boys. Compared to 5 million deliveries in 2013-14, it plans to make at least 20 million this year.
Naturally, attrition is high and salaries have begun to climb steeply. The extra cost comes out of the bottom line of the fast-food stores.
India today is a country of unsure shopkeepers.
