Shubham Banerjee - This is a 13-yr-old inventor

This 13-yr-old inventor just floored Intel with his start-up idea

If Shubham Banerjee cannot lay claim to being the world's youngest venture capital-backed entrepreneur, he comes very close.
Banerjee was 12 years old when he closed an early-stage funding round with Intel Capital, the company's venture capital arm, last month for his prototype for a low-cost Braille printer. Since then, the San Jose, California middle-schooler has turned 13.
That's young, even by the standards of Silicon Valley, where many venture capitalists unapologetically prefer to fund youth over experience.
Young entrepreneurs usually have reached at least their mid-teens when they hit it big. Nick D'Aloisio, founder of online news aggregator Summly, was 17 when Yahoo bought his company last year for $30 million.

Brothers John and Patrick Collison, behind payments service Stripe, were 16 and 19 when they sold an earlier business to a Canadian company for $5 million.
After reading a fundraising flyer about the blind, Banerjee felt inspired to turn a high-tech version of Legos, the toy building blocks, into a device that could print in Braille. One day, he wants to mass-produce the printers and sell them for about $350, far less than Braille printers cost now.
This past summer, he worked on incorporating an Intel Edison chip, a processor aimed at hobbyists, into the printer. In September, Intel invited him to a conference in India to highlight uses for Edison. There, he got a big surprise.

Intel executive Mike Bell announced from the conference stage that the giant chipmaker would invest in his company, Braigo Labs. Until then, his funding consisted of the $35,000 his parents gave him.
"I turned back to my dad, and said, 'What did he just say?'" Banerjee recalled. "I was all over the place."
Banerjee and a spokesman for Intel Capital declined to disclose the size of the investment. A person familiar with the matter said it was a few hundred thousand dollars. He plans to use it to build a better prototype of the printer and test it with more groups for the blind.
After the announcement, Banerjee had to bone up on unfamiliar terms such as "venture capital."

He also needed to convince adults to co-sign his funding and patent documents. Among the company officials he turned to: Braigo's president, his mom, Malini.
Banerjee says he gets mostly As and Bs as a student at the ChampionSchool in San Jose, California. Teachers have given him time off to attend events like the conference in India and the Intel Global Capital summit this week in Huntington Beach, California. He catches up on school work on weekends, he says.
This is the second Intel investment connected to the Banerjee family. His dad, Neil, works for Kno, an education start-up that Intel bought last year.
While many young entrepreneurs who win venture-capital cash end up ditching their education to focus on their businesses full time, Banerjee says he won't take that path.
"It's an after-school thing," he says.

From Rs 4.3-49 lakh, Harley-Davidson has it all

With the launch of three new bikes in October, Harley-Davidson, the luxury cruiser motorcycle manufacturer, has brought its country-wide offering in line with its other overseas markets. British motorcycle brand, Triumph, is the only price competitor.
Breakout, a performance cruiser from the Softail family of motorcycles, priced at Rs 16.28 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) is the cheapest of the three. This will be assembled at the company's Haryana plant.
Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout
The Street Glide Special, a fully loaded version of the touring model, is priced at Rs 29.7 lakh.
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special
In addition to extreme power from the twin-cylinder engine, the bike also comes with creature comforts such as a 6.5-inch infotainment system, surround speakers, dual halogen headlamp and anti-lock braking system.
Though Harley never reveals the power figures, with two cylinders, the Street Glide Special could be more powerful than most hatchbacks.
A limited edition, custom-built, hand-crafted bike, CVO, completes the Harley line-up. The CVO is the most expensive, priced at Rs 49.23 lakh and will be available from 2015.
Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operation
Every year, the company's engineers are given a free hand in customising, resulting in the Custom Vehicle Operation (CVO). Only a few CVOs are built every year and sell "in single thousands", according to the company. Both the Street Glide Special and CVO will be imported from the US.
Anoop Prakash, MD, Harley-Davidson India says, "India now has the same line-up of our bikes that you will see anywhere else in the world. Our range now starts at Rs 4.3 lakh and goes up to Rs 49 lakh.
In the 500cc and above category we have a market share of 60 per cent."
In the Auto Expo in February this year, Harley introduced two new bikes, including the Street 750, at Rs 4.1 lakh, that brought down its entry price.
With the latest spate of launches, its portfolio comprises 13 products. Having entered in 2009, Harley has enjoyed a favourable run, with leisure riding growing among the upper-middle class.
Buyers did not have a product to choose from in the cruiser category beyond the Royal Enfield range and the Eicher-owned company does not have an engine higher than than 500-cc. "It is good that buyers are choosing (Bajaj) Avengers and Royal Enfields because one day they will graduate to Harleys", says Prakash.
Though the Street 750 is less profitable than its other bikes, it targets the affluent Enfield buyer who was craving choice.
British motorcycle brand, Triumph, is the only price competitor. Indian, a brand owned by US-based off-road vehicle specialist Polaris, also has bikes in the cruiser category but at a very premium range. Both Triumph and Indian entered India in the last one year.
Through 15 dealerships, Harley has sold 6,000 units so far.

10 countries that are poorer than WhatsApp

Image: Facebook paid about $22 billion to acquire messaging app WhatsApp. Photograph: Steve Marcus/Reuters
Recently, Facebook closed the WhatsApp acquisition after European Union approved the purchase.
In a notice to the US stock market regulator (Securities and Exchange Commission), Facebook said that the final price of acquiring the app is about $22 billion.
The cost of acquisition went up from the earlier $19 billion due to the rise in Facebook's stock price.
The amount that the social networking site spent for the buyout is much more than the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of many nations.
Let’s look at 10 well-known nations that have GDP less than the price Facebook paid for the chat messenger.
Please note: This does not imply that these nations can be bought by paying price equivalent to their GDP.
